Let’s Go for A Run… In the Heat!

Hello there!

Well since I skipped over the whole Tips for Tuesday, I thought I would mix it up and do Tips for Thursday!

Yesterday was spent getting in a 30 minute run and 30 minutes of an #NTC workout which was called Squat Part {I totally recommend this work out for a leg day!}


When I first started running I was a senior in high school, I started running at the end of my senior year so the weather was pretty warm. I learned quickly what I had to do in order to stay cool {i.e. tanks, shorts, water} but their was still some other things I needed to change/learn in order to have a successful run.

As I became more serious about running, these things which I learned became second nature. Once I started training the 5k program however, they had no idea what to expect or what to do when it came to running in the heat. So my tips for Thursday are all about running in the heat!

1. Hydration!! This is my number one tip for new runners and runners in general. Even if you are going out for an easy run or a short run, if it is hot and humid, bring some water with you. I like to use this, but I also like…

2. Dressing lightly. I find that tanks and short shorts are the best option for warm days. If you don’t feel comfortable in shorts or don’t like wearing them, try out some compression shorts! This is a great option…

Avoiding hats is also ideal because it will trap in the heat and you don’t want to trap in the heat when you are running in the heat! Wearing a visor is a much better option. Also make sure you have sunglasses which protect from the UV rays.

3. Cool down! After your run make sure you get some cold water. I also really like smoothies to round out the run or some cold chocolate milk. Don’t forget to get a cool shower as well to get off the heat and the sweat.

4. Ease into it. After months and months of cold running make sure you ease into the warmer weather. Be aware that you might need to slow down your pace or not go as long as you were able to go before, don’t be discouraged, the weather just takes some time to get use to!

5. As always, be prepared! You never know what is going to happen, make sure you bring your water bottle, road ID, a snack to munch on during your run if you are going on a distance run and some sunscreen!! Sunscreen is very important as well to protect from those rays, I really like the Coppertone Sports Pro Series.

  1. Drinking is so important while you are running. Your performance diminishes by a huge extent if you get even a little bit thirsty. If you don’t drink while you are running in really strong sunlight, you might even pass out.
